Cragstan robots & tin toys

Cragstan was a marketing and distribution firm from New York and imported post-war Japanese battery-operated and mechanical friction toys.

The company's main focus was on toys with multiple -mechanical- actions, for example robots. They made sure the company name and logo appeared on their packaging in which they were sold. Usually, these boxes were highly decorated.

Cragstan toys were produced by:

cragstan toys

Origin of name

It is assumed that the company's name was derived from a combination of the owners' names. Cragstan continued to operate through the mid 1960s.

Toys by Cragstan have more quality and are more detailed than other battery-OP toys. The fine quality, litography, boxes and the more complex actions and movements helped set Cragstan apart from other companies.

Hello, I have a Cragstan Nautlis Electronic Periscope Cat No40220.However it is slightly different from all the others I have seen on the web.It has a red body, most I've seen are black along with a few blue ones and one yellow one.The front viewer is square not round and the box is very slightly different in design, I remember have the toy as a young child around 1970 and it was a hand me down from a relative back them, so it will be a late 50's early 60's example.I can supply detailed pictures if req'd.Have you any idea what I have and why can't I find another example of it? Thank you in advance

I have several tin toy stoves from at least 1950s or earlier. The inside compartments call for 1.5 volt battery but I can't gets modern battery to fit. Obviously vintage batteries are dead What modern battery can I use to at least see if the stove lights up. Thanks
I would use one AA battery to see if it lights up.

I have a Cragstan Good Time Charlie (rich hobo under a lamp post drinking and smoking) with no wires. I am looking for a wiring schematic or images of the wiring. Thank you

Did Cragstan make the battery operated Sheriff toy before 1950. I have one, but as I look at the Sheriff toy online, mine does not look like them. Am sure mine has a rubber face, is that possible? Would like any history of this toy that you might have. Thanks for your time.
There are also some Howdy Doody sheriff toys made with rubber face. Cragstan made (or rather distributed) different kinds of Sheriff toys, made by different manufacturers. Don't know from when though, sorry!

Found this:- In 1963, Law established Vanda Industrial Development Corporation (敏達實業) to go into toy manufacturing. The key strategic client of Vanda was Cragstan, a leading American toy importer at the time was founded by Frank Stanton (1921-1999), a NYU graduate and WWII veteran who made his first fortune exporting sugar from Morocco and importing German cars such as Volkswagen and Audi into America. After selling a batch of cheap Japanese toys in the US for a huge profit, Stanton went into the toy business by establishing Cragstan and started sourcing toys from Japan and HK in the early 1950s.
Nice, thanks! At least we now have the 'stan' part of 'Cragstan'. :-)

Hello...I have a toy in the box with original paper wrapper around the toy...NOS...From my research the box looks the same as cragstan tug boat battery operated in everyway...except the cragstan name...and it was made in Hong Kong...there is a logo in the bottom right hand corner a guy (red) in a circle with registered R beside it...did cragstan ever used a different logo...or had their toys made in Hong Kong...with any merger or some other type of move...thanks for the help...Tim Bashista
Cragstan was a distribution firm, that means that it's quite possible you'll find the same toys, but from different brands. If you want, you can send a picture of the logo to

Hello, I was wondering if you could answer a question for me about the Cragstan Ford Industrial 4000 Tractor/Backhoe (cream/blue bellied one). Some seem to have a front loader and the backhoe, but others only the front. Did they sell them both ways, or have the backhoe parts just gone missing. Also do you know of anyone that sells the replacement parts such as the backhoe attachment? Thanks So much!
I've searched and searched but couldn't find anything I'm afraid! For parts I suggest searching for 'vintage toy parts' on Google.

I have a Cragstan "Triple Action Sports Projector" for 8mm film, in original box w/instructions. Still works, though not very well... I recently read these machines had an interesting sort of double life. While designed and sold legitimately as a kids' toy, often accompanied by NFL football clips or cartoons; turns out quite a few were also sold in "adult novelty" shops as accessories for 8mm "stag" films!
Thanks for sharing this!

While Cragstan did make quite a few very complicated and innovative toys, or import them, many others did as well Many of them look like Rube Goldberg contraptions inside where the magic is!The "Smoking VW Bug has a start stop mech, a shake mode with wheels stopped and a bellows that is actuated by a ring and pinion and a long shaft with what looks like a small prop. There is a cylinder device behind the engine reflector that is wired in the circuit, it "smokes" something that smells like candle wax, the bellows come on when in shake mode and smoke pours out the pipe. It is a "mystery action" and came with "crazy daisy's" on the body, you would have had to been there. Point is, all of these are little marvels made out of thin tin and a lot of ingenuity. For a lot of us the 727 Boeing is the ultimate plane but the never made SST isn't bad either! Learning how to repair them and fix the lights, and even add wax back in a "smoker", has made it a lot more interesting and with practice can be done without being able to tell it's been opened. Even the paint and decals can be fixed, or like the Kenner DB5 totally repainted to perfect. More later, B
Thanks for this info B! Very appreciated.
