Tinplate and litographed Ferris wheel toys.
George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. was a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, bridge-builder. He began his career in the railroad industry and then pursued an interest in bridge building. Ferris understood the growing need for structural steel and founded G.W.G. Ferris & Co. in Pittsburgh, a firm that tested and inspected metals for railroads and bridge builders.
The original 'Ferris Wheel' (or a big wheel in the UK) was first designed and constructed by Ferris as a landmark for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The generic term, now used in American English for all such rides, has become the most common type of amusement ride at state fairs in the US.
The current tallest wheel is the 167.6-metre (550 ft) High Roller in Las Vegas, Nevada, which opened to the public in March 2014.
